Photographs are the best tool we have to relive our cherished memories and remember loved ones who are no longer with us. Unfortunately photographs don’t age well and over time their quality diminishes. Because photos are printed on paper they are often affected by things such as handling, light, moisture, dust, and scratches. Regrettably, these things can ruin our photos and prevent them from lasting through the generations.

Unfortunately many people have been faced with the question of what to do with photographs that are torn or have been ruined by moisture. Do you simply toss them in the trash and risk losing the memories they hold or do you spend loads of money to have the photo restored? Fortunately you don?t have to do either. You can use photo editing software to restore the photos to their original condition.

The first step to restoring your cherished photos is to create a digital image of them so you can then edit them using your computer. Converting them to a digital image is as easy as scanning them into your computer. Once you have scanned your photo you can then begin the photo editing process.

Once you have opened your photograph inside your photo editing program I recommend that you create a copy by clicking on the file menu and selecting save as to rename your photograph. I recommend this so that you have a backup image on the off chance that you make a mistake. Once you have done this vital step you can begin to edit your photo using a few of the tools available. The tools I will talk about are the ones in Adobe Elements.

Photo restoration doesn?t require any specialized training or specific skills. All the tools are easy to use and you will quickly become adept at them. The most common tools used in this process are the smudge, blur and sharpen tool.

I am going to give you a breakdown of each of the tools and how you can use them to restore your photographs. The smudge tool is helpful when you want to eliminate any scratches that are on the original photo. You can also use the smudge tool to remove any object in the background you wish to eliminate as well as correct photos that were not properly focused.

The next tool is the blur tool. This tool will allow you to add some tone to photos so they can appear darker than they originally did. This tool is very effective when you are working with photos that have deteriorated due to long periods of exposure to sunlight. So you will be able to restore the colour in your photos so it looks bright and attractive again.

The sharpen tool is the last, most commonly used tool in photo restoration. If any parts of the photo are blurred, whether it is in the original photo or from scanning it in, this tool will fix those bits.

How To Use Photoshop CS4′s Magic Wand Tool

When I run courses on Photoshop, tools like the magic wand and the clone tools are usually the ones which everyone finds the easiest to start using because they give such immediate results. The Magic Wand is one of three tools in Photoshop which are dedicated to making selections. The Magic Wand works by selecting colours within the image adjacent and similar to any pixel that you click on. Pixels of dissimilar colour act as barriers to selection and so the selection ripples outwards from the point you click on.

As you can imagine, you will not normally completely select your intended subject with one click when you are using the magic wand to make selections. Typically, you will select part of the area that you want and you will then need to add and subtract from the selection, perhaps switching to the other selection tools from time to time. Photoshop offers you two ways of modifying a selection: you can either use modifier keys on you keyboard or activate the modifier icons on the options panel normally displayed below your menu bar.

To add more pixels to your selection, hold down the Shift key while clicking with the Magic Wand on a part of the image which is not yet selected. To subtract from the selection, hold down the Alt key and click on the part of the selection which you wish to deselect. The selection modifier icons are situated on the left of the options panel. There are four of them: new selection, add to selection, subtract from selection and select intersection. These icons effectively allow you to change selection mode on a permanent basis. Thus, for example, you could click on the second of the four icons when using the Magic Wand and click continually on different parts of a subject until it was completely selected.

A simple trick for selecting a subject against a uniform background such as a wall or the sky is to use the magic wand to select the background and then invert the selection by choosing Select – Inverse. A slight variation on this technique is to make a rough selection which completely encloses the subject as well some of the background and then to use the Magic Wand in subtract mode to remove the background from the selection.

You can control the number of pixels which the Magic Wand selects when you click on part of the image by changing a setting called tolerance. Tolerance determines how far a pixel can vary from the pixel that you click on and still be included in the selection. The default tolerance is 32 and the maximum is 255.

Digital SLR Camera Opportunities Throughout the Year

I love to use my digital slr camera to take photos of opportunities throughout the year. After all, some photos are only fun at a certain time of year.

In January, take time to celebrate the New Year with shots of Father Time, even as a cardboard cut out for a table top display. To do this, go to your nearest big box store and buy some New Year’s Eve items. These are especially fun after New Year’s when the discount stores are putting them on sale. Take them home and put them in your table top display and shoot away.

In February, hearts take the forefront. Look for displays around your area that have wonderful heart themes. Try some still life photography with a heart theme.

In March, try a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Again buy the items on sale at a big box store and take them home and play with them in your table top display.

In April, look for baby animals. This is the time of year that animals are being born and they make adorable photos.

In May, try graduation photos. Make sure to take a long range lens. Also as the students are graduating try some unusual head shots.

In June, try vacation photos. Look for unusual angles or unusual items to take photos of.

In July, try 4th of July photos; take exciting fireworks photos.

In August, try summer food photos. The summer harvest is at its fullest. Take wonderful food photos.

In September, take those back to school photos.

In October, try Halloween photos. Make your own pleasing scary photos.

In November, try fall photos outdoors. The fall harvest is bountiful and you can take some wonderful shots of Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends.

In December try Christmas photos and don’t forget to get some shots of your favorite lighting decorations around town.

This article has hopefully given you some reasons to get out and use your digital slr camera all year long.

Suggestions for a slim sized digital camera?

I have a good digital camera but it’s bulky. I want one to slip into a pocket. A Sony DSC T7 is nice but too pricey and not many used ones available.Any ideas but bear in mind must be reasonable price. Thank you. (A phone with camera is too complicated for an old fool!)

Sony cybershot 10.1 mp….it’s awesome it takes super good pictures and it’s a touch screen camera. Also is has a paint program on the camera where you can draw on the pic or put different little stamps on the pic like hearts, stars, snowflakes, and lots more in all different colors

What’s the difference between a digital camera and an SLR camera? What are the advantages of a camera that can do both?

Nowadays, most SLR’s are digital. You are probably really trying to compare ‘compact’ cameras with SLR’s.

SLR stands for ‘Single Lens Reflex’, and it basically means that when you focus or frame a shot, you are looking through the actual lens that will take the picture, not just a dinky viewfinder pointing in approximately the right direction.

SLR cameras are bigger, faster and more flexible than compact cameras, and more expensive. You can get decent SLR for around $400-$500, good ones for around $1000, and the best for $5000 or more.

Part of the power of the SLR camera is their interchangable lens systems. You aren’t stuck with the lens that came with your camera – you can buy different ones for different purposes (or just better quality / more features). If you buy a good lens you can keep it forever, and use it on your next camera. A compact digital camera you just have to throw away after a couple of years, because it’s obsolete.

What digital camera do you recommend?

I want to buy a digital camera in the next few months and am aware some of the ‘better’ digital cameras are very pricey. I looked at previous questions to see which cameras are recommended but this doesn’t help me make a decision, I also looked at reviews online.

Could anyone answer the question stating the digital camera they use, and an example of photography they have taken using the camera without any editing and why they personally think it is a good camera (e.g. easy to use, photo quality, functions of the camera).

My budget is £500. I am open to all suggestions as this will help me make a better decision.

This is a question only you can answer, if your keen on photography and want to get the maximum control then it has to be a DSLR. There are just too many restrictions with a compact, small sensor and shutter delay are just two. The only advantages they do have is size and portability.

When you buy a DSLR you are buying into a system, the camera is just the down payment.

The resolution of the camera just determines the size of picture you can print without adding (or removing pixels – ‘interpolation), nothing else. As a guide a 6Mp camera will print ‘natively’ at a tad over A4, a 10Mp at A3+, but that does mean you can crop half the pixels away and still have enough for a good A4. I have 2 Pentax DSLR’s a *istDS (6Mp) and a K10D (10Mp) this means I can use the same lens to do comparative tests. When printed at A4 size I can see no difference, even with a magnifying glass, at A3 you don’t need the magnifying glass the difference is easy to see, the 10Mp K10D wins hands down.

The make of DSLR does not matter one jot, the lens quality does, so go for the most functions for the money. Pentax score heavily here, having Anti Shake in camera means ALL you lenses are Anti Shake, there’s not a price premium to pay as with other makes. Plus there are a massive range of quality old lenses all of which can be used on their DSLR’s (with some limitations).
